Free Will
and
Blood Sacrifice?

It has been stated in the New Testament of the Judeo-Christian Holy Bible (Hebrews 6:18) that: "it is impossible for God to lie."

Is that "impossibility" of an apparent cannot in fact based upon a will not?

In other words, does God have no free will - no capacity to choose what He wants to do . . . pertaining to whether or not He not only wanted to but currently and in the future wants to be consistent (or instead capriciously inconsistent?) as to what infomation He has already conveyed to humans?

Certainly, the Creator (at least up to now) has an absolutely perfect record of never once being inconsistent in anything spoken or done in all creation from the beginning of time. But does that mean that He - all of a sudden - cannot be even slightly inconsistent (simply "for the heck of it" or "for variety, to not be boring")?

Perhaps you have heard someone claim: "I did it because I can." And when asked: "Why did you do what you can?" the ultimate answer is: "Because I wanted to do what I can."

Again, free-will choice is the ultimate and end-reply answer as to any "why" query.

Some might assert that "it is simply God's nature to not lie." But that does not mean either that His nature was created, nor does it of necessity imply that that "nature" does not in part consist of His free will that always has existed, exists now, and forever will continue to exist.

Part of that "image of God" humankind was endowed with consists not merely of a sense of morality (something lower lifeforms do not possess) but also of free will and the capacity to choose pertaining to being either moral or immoral (and not operate on simply robotic-like instinct).

Some translations of the New Testament (Titus 1:2) state that "God cannot lie" while others state that "God does not lie."

Important difference . . . as to choice on God's part pertaining to free-will choice capacity, contrasted with mere choice-incapable nature of being.

The overwhelming majority of translations of Psalm 89:35 quote God as saying: " I will not lie to David."

WILL not (instead of "cannot")?

The Revised Standard Version states:

Romans 7:18 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it.

The Greek Text concept behind that inadequate translational rendition is properly understood with the wording:

Romans 7:18 I know that in me, that is in my sin-craving flesh, resides no good, because to will is present in me, but to work out the good I do not find.

And yet even that has to be correctly understood, because if no will nor intention to do good was there, no one would ever do anything good (unless forced against their first intent) . . . whether obeying the Ten Commandments . . . to accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior from sin.

Free-will choice yet reigns supreme and continues to operate -- whether one is besieged by sin-craving flesh or the temptations "causing" (actually: resulting in) sinful flesh to cave in to those temptations.

It can safely be assumed (rather than "presumed") that sentient entities (in most cases, beings and even lifeforms having eternal souls and destinies, such as heavenly angels, heavenly saints, Jesus, Satan, demons, humans) have the capacity of free-willed choice.

Job 34:4 Let us choose what is right; let us determine among ourselves what is good.

Job 34:33 Will He then make requital to suit you, because you reject it? For you must choose, and not I, therefore declare what you know.

Psalm 16:4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their libations of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.
Psalm 78:67 He rejected the tent of Joseph; He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim

Proverbs 1:24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
1:25 and you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,
1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you,
1:27 when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
1:28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
1:29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD . . .

Proverbs 3:31 Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways.

John 6:70 Jesus answered them: "Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?"

Other lifeforms (e.g. apes, dolphins, dogs, cats, horses, insects, birds, fish) do NOT have free-willed choice, nor do they meaningfully form words to convey concepts and thoughts and ideas (sorry all you Planet of the Apes fans), nor do they have comprehension of what is morally right and immorally evil (hence, they - as soul-less creatures - have no eternal destiny in Heaven nor Hell . . nor even emotions related to awareness of good or evil).

Such lower lifeforms operate merely on instinct and only possess certain and limited capacities for survival engrained into them, manifested as stimulis-reponse actions to an extremely-complex combination of myriad and constant-variety environmental phenomena which they respond to.

No dog nor cat, for example, "loves" or "hates" its owner (and the word "it" is used to properly term its soul-less nature, even though it also can be categorized as having male or female gender). The dog or cat merely responds positively or negatively to [human] food or abuse givers with survival instinct.

How do we know that God the Creator "cannot lie" by mere observation of nature around us? Sure, He absolutely has not nor never lied nor been inconsistent at any time in the past pertaining to His impeccable 100% reliability as to the perfectly-consistent environmental phenomena He created (and continues to actively maintain).

Frequently, "how" and "why" questions are senselessly irrelevant questions, and all that is needed is to accept premises as "that" instead of including burdensome ponderings or questionings of "how" and/or "why."

For instance, suffice it to say that attaching a Forever Stamp to an envelope and putting it into the mailbox will cause the letter to be transported to the stated address on the envelope the stamp is attached to. It is not necessary (nor even helpful, especially because of time limitations) to delve into the "how" nor the "why" of the attached stamp resulting in desired postal-service action occurring, but simply a "that" regarding the event happening.

So "why" or "how" God and His created environmental phenomena around us have been and continue to be perfectly consistant is needless diversion and a waste of time unless there is justifiable purpose for such musings and speculations.

So, could God lie and be inconsistent - if He chose to be (with His free will)? Could the Devil or demons repent and be saved - if they chose to be (with their free wills)? Can we humans choose (with our free wills) to do what it takes to be saved or instead damned?

It has been immutably stated in the Bible that God will never [ever] choose to lie, and also stated in the Bible that Satan and his demons will never choose to repent for salvation.

Living humans can currently choose (with their free wills) to either do good or instead do evil. However, dead human beings - even though their souls yet have free-will choice capacity - will not choose to do good if they did evil while alive, and will not choose to do evil if they did good while alive. Their status as to their eternal destiny is then immutably sealed once they are dead.

Blood Sacrifice?

Where did the idea of blood sacrifice come from, relating to expiation and absolution and atonement against sins?

Especially relating to some [so-called] "travelling, pacifist-talk-and-behavior, sort-of-weird-doctrines-uttering, Jewish preacher and healer who died a bloody death as a falsely-accused-of-treasonous-sedition criminal on some Roman cross of crucifixion over in the Middle East around two thousand years ago"?

But how is "sin" defined?

It must be stated that the redemptive gospel of Jesus Christ relating to atonement against sins is completely meaningless without the Law and reference to particulars of the Law, and the reason for that is that "sin" is correctly and truthfully and precisely defined by the moral Law and all parts thereof.

Romans 7:8 But sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, wrought in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the Law sin lies dead.

In that sense, we (who live by both observational five-senses-aware cognition and by "blind faith" in grace) have been and are yet "under Law" as Christians.

Luke 1:1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us,
1:2 as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of The Word,
1:3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
1:4 that you may know the truth regarding (not "concerning") the things of which you have been informed.

John 3:11 Truthfully I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony.

Acts 4:20 . . . we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."

Romans 8:24 In this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees?

Second Corinthians 5:7 . . . we walk by faith, not by sight.

First John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, regarding [not "concerning"] the Word of Life . . .
1:2 the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you The Eternal Life who was with the Father and was made manifest to us . . .
1:3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

First John 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son as The Savior of the world.

Second Peter 1:16 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

Law itself obviously cannot atone against unlawful sins committed by sinning-and-thus-sinful humans who have occasionally or frequently disobeyed any part of the moral Law. Partially obeying, having partially obeyed, or intending to partially or completely obey (and obviously also disobey) particulars of the Law also cannot atone for sins committed by having-sinned-and-thus-sinful humans who have at times disobeyed any or all parts of the Law.

The origins of blood sacrifice can be found early in the Old Testament, and specifically early in the first Bible book of Genesis:

Genesis 4:10 And the LORD said: "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.
4:11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of mankind, by mankind shall their blood be shed, because God made humanity in His own image.

Hebrews 9:22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

One might presume that God Himself killed (or allowed to be killed) already-defiled-by-Eve-and-Adam's-sin certain animals from which the LORD made skins to modestly clothe insufficiently-dressed aprons-only-attired Eve and Adam:

Genesis 3:21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.

However, "blood" was not mentioned at all relating to that. Nor animal sacrifice involving blood relating to that.

Before the Law was written and the practice of slaughtering animals relating to acknowledgment of sins committed and a sign of penitence involving such, allusion to blood relating to expiation existed:

Genesis 37:26 Then Judah said to his brothers: "What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?
Genesis 42:22 And Reuben answered them: "Did I not tell you to not sin against the lad? But you would not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood."

But the blood of defiled-by-"original-sin" animals never was, is not now, nor ever will be, adequate for atonement against sins -- and we know (from Scripture only, and not from observation of natural phenomena around us in our environment) what in fact does indeed atone against sins relating to the Law:

First Corinthians 5:7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened, because Christ, our Paschal Lamb, has been sacrificed.

Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Hebrews 10:1 Being that the Law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices which are continually offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near.
10:2 Else, would they not have ceased to be offered? If the worshipers had once been cleansed, they would no longer have any consciousness of sin.
10:3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin year after year,
10:4 because it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats takes away sins.
10:5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, He said: "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;
10:6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.
10:7 Then I said: "Look, I have come to do your will, God," as it is written of me in the roll of the book."
10:8 When He said above: "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the [ceremonial] law),
10:9 then He added: "Look, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish the second.
10:10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
10:11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
10:12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God,
10:13 then to wait until His enemies be made a stool for His feet,
10:14 because by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
10:15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us, because after saying:
10:16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days," says the Lord: "I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,"
10:17 then He adds: "I will remember their sins and their misdeeds no more."
10:18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
10:26 But if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins (including and especially Christ's offering of Himself against sins of the formerly penitent on His cross),
10:27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.
10:28 A man who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy at the testimony of two or three witnesses.
10:29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the person who has spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace?
10:30 We know Him who said: "Vengeance is mine, I will repay." And again: "The Lord will judge His people."
10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

All lesser sacrifices (such as praise to God, thanksgiving to God, animal sacrifices, tithes, etc. -- all of which can never atone against sins) are merely expression of an appreciation to the Lord or desire to get right with or please God.

But the only sacrifice which atones against sins committed by penitent humans is Christ's lethal sacrifice of Himself on a cross.

First Corinthians 5:7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed.

Being that true repentance involves intention to never actually sin again because of inability to completely and consistently resist powerful non-solicited temptations (especially sexual ones), we look forward to death (now and then, more or less) which will cause us to actually never ever sin again because of outside-based temptations and deprivations:

Philippians 1:21 For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
1:22 If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell.
1:23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, because that is far better (no taxes, no sexual immodest sexist-feminist harassment, no fear of vandalism, no temptations from tempters, no sickness nor injury, etc. etc.).
1:24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.
1:25 Convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,
1:26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,
1:28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear omen to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God,
1:29 because it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in Him but also suffer for His sake (as, for example, suffering sexual deprivation),
1:30 engaged in the same conflict which you saw and now hear to be mine.

In answer as to whether a living 5-year-old boy or instead a cryogenic jar of human embryos should be saved in a fire (if only one of them can be rescued),
the situation is comparable to whether a $5 bill should be saved, or instead a box of 100 pennies.
